This is an experiential therapy group aimed to use writing to facilitate healing, balance, and insight.
Psychotherapist Maureen Murdoch (2003) remarked, “No event is too small or too insignificant to write about, and Louise DeSalvo (1999), PhD wrote, “Through writing about events and feelings, participants understood what had occurred and what they felt about it, and they assimilated the meaning of this event into their lives, thereby diffusing its power over them.” Psychologist Thomas Moore (1994) also commented: “The pen, expressing the soul’s passion, is mightier than the sword because the imagination can change the life of a people at their very roots.”
No experience with previous writing is needed; only a desire to get support in expressing authentically. The group is a safe and gentle place to reflect, and gain distance over experiences. It is best suited to people who have difficulties expressing their feelings or talking about their life experiences (from contemplation to trauma, or losses.) Writing helps clarify one’s feelings, experiences, and gain perspective on our life journey. Please note this is not a creative writing group per se, and that self-reflection will be invited through prompts offered at a gentle pace. Sharing of writing will always be optional and will be moderated by the facilitator.
