Anyone can see in these strange and stressful times that many people are increasingly in distress and could use some help. Yet access to effective mental health services remains limited or non existent for so many in our communities. What can we do to help?

The Liberation Institute is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit that has providing the San Francisco area with truly accessible mental health and wellness services for over 12 years, and is now offering professional online counseling to all of California and Oregon!

We believe that mental healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. As such, we offer our services on a full, sliding scale, down to $1 a session. Thanks to the hard work of our small (but dedicated) management team and a passionate and heartfelt group of 60 volunteer clinicians, we serve 500 people a week – all while receiving $0 in government funding.

Liberation Institute’s philosophy of “Liberation for Everybody” has given us the opportunity to support a full range of clients from tech executives to the homeless. In our innovative model, the clients that can afford higher fees help cover the costs for our low fee clients. The rest of our operating costs are covered by donations from compassionate community members like you.

At this crucial time in history, Liberation Institute is uniquely positioned to help. While the need among the underprivileged is growing (at present, 88% of our clients are low income and 79% are below the poverty level), our ability to serve them via phone and internet (and in person again as soon as possible) is ready to grow as well!

Our frugal, scrappy and passionate model for community mental health is efficient and scalable. All we need in order continue and expand our services to the most vulnerable is additional funds.

In times of increasing inequality, polarization and isolation, we believe that healing hearts and minds in our community (regardless of ability to pay) is more important than ever before. We also know that healing and growth generate a ripple effect that fortifies the entire community. Because it takes a village, we are inviting open hearted individuals and compassion-oriented businesses and organizations to join us.
