Overtone singing is an ancient shamanic practice of chanting which involves producing overtones along with the main voice. Its sibling throat singing produces a low, droning sound which is sung with the help of false chords that in most people these days aren’t heavily used. Such singing is very close to deep meditation in the effect on the mind, as it clears our thoughts and increases awareness. Based on imitations of the sounds of nature, various throat & overtone singing practices have been used throughout the World. Yet, they have been lost in most of modern societies where people are not as intimately connected to nature.
Arthur invites both complete beginners and experienced singers to sit together in a circle in a darkened room to sing. The evening will start with simple chanting sounds before actually getting into overtone and throat singing. Arthur will show and explain the styles of Kyrgyraa, Khoomei and Sygyt, which are still practiced among Tuvan, Buryat, Sakha and Mongolian people.
Nothing special needs to be brought. Chairs and mats provided. Welcome!
Suggested donation: $10. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Email to RSVP.
